Find something to cover your fender and tank. This comes from experience things will hit them during ape install.

Leech1107, thanks for the reminder. I am going to cover everything up before I start removing the bars. I've done the ape install thing 9 previous times and after the first time on my old '91 FXSTS I started covering up all of the painted surfaces. We'll say I learned the hard way.

Well, we got a little more completed today. In the first picture you can see the metal clips I mentioned earlier that hold the rubber boot in place. You can also notice the electrical plugs for the right side controls. The first order of business today was to remove the air cleaner so that I could get to the throttle/idle cables. To do this I used a 5/16" allen wrench to remove the cover. After it is removed there are 3 torx head bolts that hold the filter to the throttle body. I used a T27 to remove those. Then it was just a matter of removing the 2 breather bolts that hold the backing plate to the heads. After all of this was out of the way I loosened up the slack adjusters on the throttle/idle cables for some extra slack and was able to remove them from the throttle body. Now it was on to the brake line. I unbolted it at the caliper with a 3/8" 12 point socket. Now that all of the cables were free I used a 3/4" socket on a 1/2" ratchet to remove the riser bolts and hauled everything to the air conditioned workshop to transfer the switches over to the new housings.

The breather out of the way so that I could get to the throttle/idle cables.

Stripped to the bare essentials.

Malingerer, as you mentioned the nacelle would not clear under the riser in it's stock configuration. So, I turned a couple of 3/8" spacers on the old trusty lathe. The 3/8" spacers gave the riser just enough height for the Nacelle halves to easily clear. I was worried about going too high with the riser because then the riser cover would not fit. I managed to get the bars semi mounted and got the new throttle/idle cables installed.

Looks good man. Coming together very well.

Course, it doesn't hurt that you have a metal lathe either!
