Had an old super glide with the same issue--half tank and it was time for the reserve. The previous owner had it worked unsuccessfully several times. I just went by the mileage and rode on. Kinda sucked, but got used to it.
After all of these years, Harley still don't know how to make something as simple as a gas gauge work and not even embarrassed about it. For two cents I would buy a Honda , that is if I could get one for two cents. But I'll bet the gas gauge would work.
I bend the metal rod on the floater a bit when I had all the gear out of the tank for painting ... now a bit more accurate, don't think it is worth the time and effort to keep taking all the stuff out of the tank to tweak the floater.
I just put one one of the trip meters to zero every time I fill up.
The miles/kms left feature on my bike seems to be accurate though.
Funny enough, the fuel gauge on my 1991 FXRS was dead accurate.
