Default exhaust on 08 Softail Deluxe

I have a 2008 Softail Deluxe with VH True Duals. I love the performance and sound but the exhaust on the left side sticks out beyond the derby cover and even with heat shields on it gets very hot, to the point of painful, even with jeans on. I'm only 5'4 and this is a real problem at times, especially if I have to back the bike up and it's hot, or I'm stopped somewhere where I'd prefer to have both feet flat instead of cocking that left foot up to keep my thigh away from the exhaust. I am trying to find a solution without spending a fortune on a new set of pipes.
Can anyone give me some suggestions on a new exhaust system that won't sacrifice performance? I thought about going back to the stock exhaust but was told at the dealership that I would not only sacrifice performance but also have to replace the air flow (?). They suggested VH Big Shots Long which are $700? Surely those can't be the only pipes I can get that won't sacrifice performance? Forgive me if my terminology is incorrect. I'm not mechanically minded, and this is my first bike. I don't want to be taken advantage of at the dealership so I'm mainly trying to get some advice from others more experienced than me.
thanks guys!
Deb
