Default Fuel splashing problems.

Has anyone had a problem with fuel up splashing out of the fuel tank while they are riding? The last time my OL said it even splashed onto her. It has happened to me a 4 times now. When I fill it, I stop before the fuel is coming up into the neck, and I've made sure to keep twisting the cap until I hear it clicking.

I've already bought a new gas cap, anyone have an idea what else it could be?

Turn the cap until it clicks, then push down on it with the palm of your hand and turn it again. You should get another 1/4 turn or more. That works for me. Not sure why HD can't get this problem fixed though. Bad cap seals I think.

The bike had a vented fuel cap when I bought it so I've kept that type. It will keep turning (and clicking) regardless of how long I twist it.

I had this problem on my 2010 FXDWG. Most annoying thing ever, not to mention dangerous as hell. I once hit a bump and got completely soaked.

What solved it was doing what the above poster put as a solution. Turn til clicky, then push down hard and put another 1/4th turn on it.

What I finally started doing to check this was put my hand over the cap and grip it in my hand. If my fingertips could not get under the cap - no fuel would spill. As I fueled the bike more frequently, the problem seemed to go away as the cap seemed to seat easier.

Good point. Maybe these caps wear 'in' instead of 'out'. I haven't tried it without the second step in a long time. Just got used to doing it this way. Some have reversed the gasket and had success too.

Thanks Odingaard, I've never tried to push it further down, but I'll give that a try.

I'm thinking this is probably a problem with bad gas caps. I've had two relatively late model bikes, a 2010 Fat Bob and my current 2012 Fat Boy Lo and all I've ever done is turn the cap till it clicks. No pushing down or anything like that. That's with around 24,000 miles between the two bikes. I'd keep making Harley warranty the gas caps till you get a good one.

Yeah, this. You shouldn't have to be cranking on those caps like some here describe. I turn mine until the first click and it doesn't spill a drop. You are dealing with defective caps, and need to keep replacing them until you find one correctly made.
