I put a ziploc bag over the filter and unscrew, catches most of the oil...whats left i spray with brake cleaner or carb cleaner...5 years now and all the paint, black **** and dirt is still there....70000 miles????? might me time to wash it.
I have a plastic oil filter tray that snaps under the filter before you remove it. It channels the oil from the filter to the oil catch pan. All I have to do is wipe off the oil filter mating surface and screw on the new filter. Nothing to clean up unless I "ham fist" something, then I use some Simple Green.
I tuck a sheet of tinfoil up under the filter before I pull it and channel it down to a catch pan..keeps the oil off the bike. Working on devising something a little more sturdy, maybe molding a trough with an old milk jug and the heat gun.
Cut a plastic coke bottle in half and slide it under the filter..........what little that's left clean up with simple green.
