Default oil change mistake

I just changed my oil. This is only the second time I've done this on a bike and I forgot to change the oil filter. I have the filter I just forgot to replace it. My thinking is it won't hurt it to go one change without a new filter. I've been babying this bike, change every 3000 for oil, 6000 for primary and 14000 to 15000 for transmission. So what is your guys opinion? One time no harm?

I've skipped the filter many times on many different engines for many different reasons with no problems I just wouldn't skip the next go around.

You'll be OK, but I would change the filter now. You'll only lose a couple of ounces.

There is a school of thought, ( particularly with these high mileage oils for cars,) that the filter change is as or more important than the oil change.

+2 to changing it now. You will not lose all of the oil, just a couple of ounces. Just for peace of mind.

If you haven't started bike...yet...with hew oil - swap filters. Nothing's traveled through the new oil & removing old filter won't affect anything.

If you change at 3000 miles it shouldn't hurt at all to skip the filter this time. I do my engine oil/filter at 5000.

Thanks for your replies. Stiggy I've seen earlier posts by you and your one of the ones I watch on here. Already ran the bike so I'm going to take the chance that one time will cause no harm. I baby it in every way, don't ride it hard at all the ride is what gives me the pleasure not the speed.

A bike with some miles on her like yours will have less contaminates than a new one just breaking in, in the motor oil.

That one reason they do the 1k and 5k. So the filters don't clog up and go into by-pass.

Normal oil change is 5k, So with U changing oil at 3k I wouldn't be worried about going another 3k for a total of 6k on a filter. But no longer than that.

I'd think a lot of members have taken trips and ended up logging over 5k before they got their oil changed. My son just got back from a 2k trip that ended up being 3.2K.. so he now has 6.1k on this oil change.

Also longer rides is easier on oils than a bunch of short rides but as U said U did change the oil..

Bottom line is what's Ur comfort level.. and if U feel OK by doing it.
