I tried a new Bell 500 and the quality of the helmet was terrific. The only two things that were deal breakers were, I found the helmet hot with no air vents , and I could see the visor in my field of sight.

I'm done with open face and full face helmets. I really like half helmets now. Cooler in the summer and better hearing.

I have had a GMAX half helmet for years. Very good inexpensive helmet and no mushroom head. I use ear plugs to cut the noise. I have a HJC 3/4 for cooler weather and this even has air vents. HJC seems to have a little better quality than the GMAX but both are good helmets.

Splatt is on point. In fact (as @macksmacky said) Scott at ChemicalCandy painted my last bike and I LOVED it. He's crazy busy though and there are some other good ones out there.

http://www.devilshandproduction.com/ - Ellis is awesome, responsive, and does amazing work. Had a helmet by him.

http://timebombkustoms.bigcartel.com/ - Great painter, does quality work at a decent price.
