On other bikes I've had, you don't pull on the bars. Grab somewhere over the center of gravity like a saddlebag bar or something similar, pull up and back while at the same time push down on the center stand. If you don't have any bars you may be able to make a handle which would slip under the top of the frame or something to give you a hold.

That's how I used to do it with one of my old H***as... I also agree with the advise of not pulling on the bars. You should be able to steady the bike with the bars, step on the center stand, grab the frame with your other hand and pull up and back as you push the stand down.

I used a center stand on my Fatboy for years.
-First off, adjust the center stand to its lowest setting.
-While standing beside the bike, position the bike straight up vertically.
-With your right foot, step down on the center stand arm while pulling back on the handlebars.
It takes a bit of force but becomes easier once you've done it a couple times. Have a buddy help you the first couple times until you become accustom to it.
