I have been needing a new front tire for my nightrain, figured I would pick one up here at the beginning of spring when I started riding more again. Came across a new never mounted Harley Magnum 5, 21 chrome wheel, brand new tire and rotor for 450, so I figured that was a pretty good deal and picked it up. Only problem is it has 3/4 bearings in it now, so here is my question.


The axles on these bikes step up or down to go into the fork legs, if I bought a 3/4 axle, would it fit into my fork legs? I tried to find the part numbers but didn't have any luck. Now I highly doubt this is possible, but I just wanted to check because that would be easier than buying and installing bearings......so don't make too much fun of me.

Why not just do a bearing swap? Bearings are a lot cheaper than an axle and you wouldn't have to worry about your forks fitting or not.

 

I would buy new bearings anyway!

 

yep, just swap bearings. if the wheel wasnt made for that bike, you may need different spacers as well though. not a big deal either

 

Wheel was made for this front end, just a different year, bearings in it are brand spanking new, so if I dont need to change them I won't.


I am just exploring all options, because I know that a wheel kit for my bike from HD will be 69.99, and the cost of having the other ones pulled and having these pressed in, plus the time, I just was curious about the axle instead.

 

This is the only front wheel on the bike you will be riding down the freeway. Change the bearings and be done with it. There is no spacer or shim or axle that will allow you to use the 3/4" bearings. Probably because the liabiltity would be so high no one would be crazy enough to make one.

Seriously buy the new bearings and don't risk your life trying to rig something to work.

I have that wheel on my Train. You might be able to just swap the bearings from the stock wheel over as it is an HD wheel as long as they don't have a ton of miles on them.

 

I think there is a little mis-communication going on here. I am not trying to rig up anything. I just simply asked if the forks would accept different axles because they step to different sizes at the points they contact the fork tubes, and I could not find an answer anywhere else. Didn't mean it to sound like I was buying a wheel from a junkyard and putting it on with duck tape.....

 

No, a 3/4" axle will not fit in your fork legs. You need the same size axle you pulled off to go back in. That's what size your fork legs were made for. Change the bearings
