+1 on this,, need to have the heads ported to match Ur build, not just any porting will give U the best result nor is this the time to go cheap, the better the better It'll be.

I'm in the same boat, have about a grand to spend. I think I'm going gear drive cams (hydro I'd run out its to much) and a big bore. 35k on my scoot it time to ditch the old shoes.

03' thinking 570's I figure if I'm opening up the top its easy to put some high lift springs in. Torn on the hyro set up as it comes with a new cam plate & oil pump.

The upgraded cam plate is $500, cam $300, adjustable pushrods $200, put you at a grand already. That's assuming you do all the work yourself. Then there's incidentals like gaskets, oil, tools, etc. Putting a cam in without at least a decking and cc of the heads is a waste of money.

I have an 04 carbed 88 ..
First I went a/c, 95 bore kit , slightly more aggressive cam, and exhaust.
That was a little seat of your pants exciting...

Then I went with a Mikuni carb, andrews cams and an ecu upgrade.
Even better of a kick in the a$$!

Got her Dyno tuned to get it all workin together. About 80 hp and 93 tq.
A slight more kick in the pants.
I got on it on an LA freeway on-ramp last night and it's an adrenaline rush for sure!!

Look for my thread next weekend for my eval on some more upgrades that you may be interested in.

Hey Jason, just wondering, what do you mean by ecu upgrade. Do you mean a DTT ignition? I have a carbed 95" with Andrews 26 cam, decked heads, pushing 80 hp/ 97 tq and may be interested in that if I can gain some inexpensive hp.

My 06' 88 was built before it left the dealership. This is what I did:

95" kit with flat tops.
Heads were done in house
Baisley oil pump spring to increase pump pressure. This is a $20 item that may be the most important to do.
SE 204 cams
I used .40 SE head gaskets.
For me a tuner, for you, a simple re-jet.

Big gains, completely reliable, two year HD warranty, tons of low end and the cams don't ever quit at the top end either.

If you wanted to spend a little more, do the roller cam chain conversion.

I believe it is a zippers drag ignition to improve the spark. This was one of the things my indie did for me as I'm not very knowledgeable about spark advance. He said you just program the ecu with a laptop. However, I could not tell you if it made that much of a difference as I added a Mikuni carb and cams at the same time which was a real kick in the ***!!
He did mention another Zippers ecu product which runs about a grand and he said I would get another grip full of throttle.
I'm sorry I could not be more help. I will see my indie this week as I do spend a lot of time there trying to pick things up. If I learn anything more I'll pm you.
