How much Motor oil I got out on the change
#21
The oil in these need to be changed when it's hot.
Well not hot enought to burn your hands, but after a
ride.
When I change it hot, it takes 3 qts. Then . . . I ride it around for
a mile or two, shut it down, check the level and it will take 1/4 -
1/3 qt.
I have made the mistake and over filled mine. It blew out the breather all over.
Once, on my wifes 03 I forgot and drained it cold. Only 2 qts came out.
I refilled it with 2 (left the flter on) and ran it a few hundred miles. Next
time when I did the oil change I drained it HOT and 3+ came out. Thats another way to flush the syst.
2 extra qts of that Amsoil is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ !!

I drain the oil, change the filter, and put 3 qts of oil in. Never a problem.
I'm always reminded of what the old timer used to tell me back in the 60's when I was always "what iff-ing" everything...
He'd look at me, take a deep breath and say slowly and solemnly:
"It ain't rocket science, son, it's a Harley."

The above 3 posts contain correct information, though I have issues with a couple of statements. However, I am no expert.
These engines keep much filthy oil in the engine. That's why the oil looks like garbage on the dip stick an hour after the change. There are scavenging systems on the market to prevent this. Are they necessary? Who knows. I hate dirty oil, though, so I am ordering one soon:

It is NOT the f'ing space shuttle....it's 1930's technology. Be doing this on mine for 15 years with NO problems. 1984 EVO never been rebuilt...not even the top end. Scavenging is a total waste of time if you are changing your oil at regular intervals. With the exception of my 7 year old pick-up...everything I own is antique, with the original un-rebuilt engines still in good shape... with nothing but religious every 3k mile oil changes with cheap dino oil....keep wasting your time and money.

true ... not rocket science... there is going to be oil in the crankcase and if your oil was at full and you took out 2 1/2 quarts.. why in the hell would anyone put in 3 back in!!! you DO NOT WANT TO OVER FILL...not Good!
bottom line check dip stick and add as needed to get in between the marks... alot easier than having to get too much out.

I drain the oil, pull the filter, re-install the new filter and add 2 quarts and then start the bike.
Once the oil light goes out, I stand the bike upright and add oil until it comes up to near the bottom of the dipstick neck.
That is usually three quarts.
With my wife's '08 (with auxiliary oil cooler) I fill the same way and it's usually a tad over 3 quarts.
When we're on a trip, I check the oil at the end of the day and add a bit of oil if necessary.
