+1,,, this might be it... I clean and oil the shifer lever at least 2x a yr and every oil change.

 

I have a 99 Electra Glide Classic and had the same problem. It started about 2 weeks ago, every once in a while when I upshifted the shift lever would not return and I had to hit it with my foot.

It got progessivly worse until it was doing it almost every shift on the way home from work tonight.

I started looking around and found out the bolt on the rear of the shift linkage had worked its way out and was letting ithe outside of the shift linkage rub against the top inside of the primary case.

Easy fix, added a little bit of blue thread locker and tightened the bolt up.

Problem fixed, I love it when a plan comes together.
