Default Will i need a tune?

Hi,

I'm thinking about fitting either:

- S&S Dual runner intake
or
- K&N Intake. 63-1125P

to a stock 2008 Softail Deluxe.

I think they both look kinda cool.

Do i need to get a tune after fitting either of these??
I will upgrade the exhaust in the future, and know i will need a tune then, but will i need one after fitting either of these types of intakes for now?

Thanks.

Most say if you're only doing one upgrade (either exhaust OR intake) you don't really need a tune. Since you're planning to upgrade the exhaust down the road, maybe get a FuelPak or PowerCommander now, tune for the intake, and then tune again when you get the exhaust.

I disagree with the above statement. Any time you add a hi flow air filter to your bike you are greatly increasing the amount of air that is entering the engine, leaning out the mixture more than it already is. This lean mixture needs to be richened up with more fuel to cool the bike down and allow it to run better. Rule of thumb is new air filter you need a tuner. New exhasut and air filter add a tuner as well. new exhaust only, no tuner needed.

Now a quick word about the Harley "dealer download". This si $150 at the dealer and they always try to sell it. This canned tune has to meet EPA standards and will not allow your bike to run the way it needs to with the addition of an air filter and/or exhasut. I tried this on my bike way back when and it ran like crap. Guess what i did? I added a tuner and it ran much, much better.

Thanks for the replies.
Maybe i'll wait and do the intake, exhaust and tuner all at the same time.
Makes sense.
