Check engine light help
Hey guys, I don't have a code. Just hoping for a quick answer or maybe some ideas as to why my 03' nightrain check engine light has been cycling on and off at startup. That's the only time it comes on and it just started a couple weeks ago after our first freeze. It was a cold morning, had a false start and now the light comes on for about 7 seconds at startup. Bike feels and runs great. Any ideas or experience? I know I need to get the code read but thought I'd throw this out there. It's buggin' the hell outta me.

I don't know for sure how you read the codes on an '03 but on my '06 you hold in on the odometer button while turning the bike on, watch the speedo swing, and then you will be in code display mode. You quick press the odometer button to cycle through the categories of codes and you hold the odometer switch in for a few secs and it will display the codes (if any) for the current code group. If there is more than one, quick click will cycle you through the codes in the group. A short hold will get you to the next group. When you see a code if you hold in on the button for 10 secs the code will clear. Don't clear your codes unless you know what caused them.
We can't tell you anything, I don't think, until you have a DTC number. The number will be a letter followed by four digits.
If you want to know about this kind of stuff, you need to buy a shop manual for your bike.
Let us know what you find out.

My 03 Road King did the same thing a few years back after a false start. It did not have a code associated with it. The advice i was given was that it would reset after 50 engine starts (i think it was 50 ) Anyway after a few rides and several starts (didn't keep track) it went away.
Good luck

After logging a code the light will come on and stay on for a few seconds on the next 50 start ups.
