New Harley Owner - what are these drain plugs?

NEVER REMOVE THAT PLUG!! It has a tapered fitting, and if you overtighten it even slightly, you could strip out or crack the boss in the motor case. That plug is for performing certain test functions, and it is also used, I believe, during manufacture to machine an oil gallery that can't be accessed except through the motor case. In any event--FORGET IT EVEN EXISTS!
IMHO, the manual is NOT intended for newbies. It is intended for people who have at least a working knowledge of the mechanics of their Harleys. By all means, buy the manual, but before you do anything, discuss it with the service manager or a tech at your dealership. Ask lots of questions. Don't worry;these people LOVE talkin' about bikes & showing off their knowledge.

The manual while good, and in "My Opinion" virtually mandatory IS or WAS written for people with more than passing familiarity with Harley's.
The parts manual is another book that I think is nearly mandatory for newbe's because it not only shows all the part numbers.
It uses good clear exploded diagrams that show the relationship of various parts to one another.
This can be VERY helpful any time you pull a bunch of parts off and the wife suddenly reminds you know you were supposed to take her shopping or something.
Then when you finally get back to the bike you can't remember exactly how or in what order all of those parts you left on the garage floor are supposed to go back together.
The reason that plug was so 'hard' to loosen the first time is because it was sealed at the factory and the sealant had hardened since then.
In time the new sealant you put back on it will in all probability get just as hard.
But as long as it doesn't start leaking you'll never find out.
