Default 1995 harley price help

Morning all,

New to the forum and have a question. I'm im the market of getting my first Harley, and a buddy i work with has a neighbor with what fhe says is a 1995 softail standard hes looking to unload for 6k. Im nothing close to familiar with Harleys yet, but This bike looks to have been tinkered on by someone. Its got 39.9k miles

I'm not sure of the front end and the rear fender, but the motor is an 88CI S&S.

I like the bike, I just dont want to over pay.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I'd buy it for 6k if it runs good

I got my 97 with 20K for $6800. I think 6K is pretty good for that 95. Plus the S&S motor is a nice bonus. I would ask how many miles are on the motor and tranny and primary. Just curious if anything else was replaced when the motor was put in.

Also the EVO softails are a great platform of a bike and you can pile the miles on them. However they will vibrate pretty good being unbalanced (which I love). If you pick it up get you a good HD shop manual and check EVERYTHING on the bike to ensure it is nice and tight and torqued to the propper spec. There is also an EVO section in the forum and lots of good advice there.

Hell yes! As long as it checks out good, it's well worth the 6k IMO. And like 2006FLST says, it's a great platform to build up from.

You let us know if you get it. We'll take up a collection to buy you a new rear fender

What the hell was somebody thinking when they installed that

Yeah, the fender was the first thing I noticed when my buddy sent the picture.

I paint, so the first thing I'll do is make due with the fender by cutting it to flow back and match the curve of the tire. I'd like to get a strutless rear fender.

If you cut that fender just right, it might be worth keeping. Either way, get the bike first, you'll have the rest of your life to mod it out. Still time to get on the tail end of riding season as well.

Good luck on that

I bought a '98 custom softail (Ultra was the maker) that looked similar to this one, with a claimed 13k, for $4500. Then when the motor immediately crapped out, I spent about $2K on an all new top end (pistons, lifters, head work, etc), and an inspection of the lower end, which looks great. So, a nice newish 96" S&S softail for about $6500.

That was before I started adding things to it, but I'm certainly not going to total that up.

The moral of the story = if you feel good about the mechanics (motor, tranny, primary), the $6K sounds good.

By 95 the Evo motor was just about perfected. Most agree, it was the best power plant that ever pushed a Harley. I paid $7,000 for a 98 Dyna Convertible with 3,600 miles on it and think I got a whale of a bargain.

Hmmm, sounds like an S&S big bore kit on an Evo motor not a complete S&S motor. Still not a problem if installed correctly. Clearly the bike has been modded both engine and sheet metal. Make sure it starts and runs good. Watch for oil weeping at the heads and base gaskets. If you know the history ask if the cams are changed and if they used better bearings (Timkin).

Is it an S&S motor or just their cylinders? If it's a motor, then the bike is not a Harley most likely. It's a custom build to look like one. The insurance market for customs is pretty limited, most likely Progressive.
I'd have someone experienced look the bike over, ask the questions the guys above stated, and if it's good, then you be fine. It should be a very reliable setup.
