00 and later have sealed bearings, 99 and earlier have tapered bearings. It can be done, but it's not worth the trouble. Best thing to do is find some 00 and later wheels. They did change rear axle from 3/4 to 1" in 03. Front wheel and axle the same 00 up.

No problem. If anything, it would make more sense to put the later (sealed bearing) wheels, on the earlier bikes. I certainly don't miss having to pack those earlier bearings. I've seen sealed bearings advertised somewhere, for the earlier wheels, I just don't remember where. Probably one of the bike mags. I believe harley recommended packing the bearings every 10,000 miles, and I know I did mine twice as often. I've heard (key word is heard) that the sealed bearing should go 100,000 miles. Now that would be an interesting poll, how many miles do you have on your (sealed) wheel bearings with no problems. I'm sure, like anything, some have failed early, but it would be interesting to know how far most are riding with no problems.
