Default Moving to a Softail... Have Questions

Hey Guys,

I'm thinking about making the jump from my Wide Glide to a Heritage Softail. My wife and I take so many long trips now, it's just more practical... not to mention, I'm the one that gets cramped up going 5 hours or more. So - my question is, should I go the more expensive route for the 2007 and up and get the six speed and the 96? Or should I go for a little less expensive and kick the 88 and 5 speed?

I'll probably do a little motor work either way, just because I want to make it mine - but at the same time, I dont get out of 5th gear on my WG unless I'm going 75-80 mph, which is rare anyway. I'd like to hear from you guys... so if i left any info out - please ask.

Thanks.

The 6 speed and 96b well worth the marginal cost.

I'm always looking for the 6th gear when I'm not riding my Fatty Lo. I think this will be a common response to this question as well.

Good luck, have fun, roll on

Me personally, I go to 6th when I hit 60 and know I'll be there a while. I've never ridden a wide glide, but I'm still shocked how smooth the 96b on the Lo actually is. It's definitely not my dads harley.

go for the 6 speed , its more economical on thos 5 hour rides and just feels better geared than the 5 speed tranny ,

I have the 88" on my '06 Heritage and I can tell you I look at the 96s with envy. Wish I had the bigger engine, the sixth gear doesn't concern me that much. I'll probably get the big bore with cams done within the next year or so. Spend a little more now and save you time, money and envy down the road.

Once you have 6th to go to....and lower the rpm at cruising speed....believe me...worth every penny to put in a 6 spd tranny along with big bore job.

If I'm running above 60 and will be there for a while, I drop it into 6th gear too. Lowers the RPMs and makes for a nice smooth ride.

Not to mention, you can roll off the throttle for a few seconds to get some feeling back and you won't slow way down....

I'd go newer. That 6th gear is nice to have......you'll come to enjoy it.

You will be amazed at how much better the heritage rides. I just went from a '10 wg to '11 heritage and am very pleased.
