Old dude, OK my age, showed that me a few years back. Made me nervous for a long time, but I have never had an overservicing issue, nor has it ever been low. You gotta check it hot yourself though, trust no one.
This is pretty much what i did with my Sportster, I will do the same with my Heritage, thanks....

When I did the 1000k service, I put in 2.5 qts.. cranked it up and ran it for about 2 minutes.. then added another quart.. haven't had any over-filling problems.

I always add 2 quarts, let it run for a few minutes to circulate, and then add as desired. I never add it to the full mark when cold as when it warms up it will be too full. Take it on a 10 minute ride with 2-2.5 quarts and check the oil, tehn add more if needed. If you ever have the chance to get oil sprayed all over the bike and your leg you will always remember.

I use a shor extension (3") with a long socket on a ratchet. It gets easier the more you do the tranny. If yoa veh overfilled

The oil filter should have 4 oz.

The oil tank will take:
2.5 quarts (80 oz) to 2.75 quarts (88 oz) if the system is wet
or
about 3.5 quarts (112 oz) if the system is dry or purged.

A simple wet change leaves between 24 and 32 oz of old oil in the oil lines/pump/sump etc.
