Default Considering 12.5" Chubby apes

Can anyone give me an idea of what is involved to change to these apes?
I'll get a quote from my independent mechanic. What kind of price should I expect?

I just did mine for the second time. Nothing magical about it, just takes alot of time.

If wiring internal, need to install wiring extensions, probably a tank pull. (I do this, some dont have to.)

New throttle cables

New clutch cable which probably means exhaust comes off and transmission cover.

New brake line which means brake bleed.

Change over grips and controls.

If you have a garage, a manual, tools, and a weekend I would do it myself.

I used the Burly cable kit and it had everything in it including the banjo washers for the brake line. Worked well.

I dont know the shop rate, but might be 8 hours of just labor. I think I had asked Harley about a bar change a few years ago and they wanted like $1400 for everything? Not sure.

Again, not rocket science, but time is money.

Good luck!

Did that last winter..Around 525.00 in parts.. your gonna need:

1.. Handlebars
2.. 50'' brake line
3.. 40'' Throttle cable
4.. 40'' Idle cable
5.. Clutch cable (cant remeber what size I bought)
6.. Clutch cover gasket
7.. Wiring extensions for your switches
8.. Poly riser bushings
9.. Trans fluid

It's not a difficult job if you take your time, Indy or dealer's gonna charge you big money for this. Get a service manual, and ask the doc for some part prices and you might save some money. Good Luck. Oh yeah, I'm running 2'' risers,so your cable lengths could be different.

You could also look into getting some premade bars with all of the wiring already done internally. You can get them with all new chrome switch housings and switches and grips already installed to. They even sell these with the brake, throttle and clutch cables included for your specific bike. Check out the following:

I bought my bars from the first one and they are beautiful.

Just the info I needed. Thanks guys. Particularly for those ebay links. I'll give the Dr. a call but that "all in one" sounds like the best deal.
Thanks again.

I just had this done on my 98 FB and all in all it was about $1200.00 for parts and labor. (note, bike was in and half torn down for Nacelle and some other things.

I'm in the process of doing this now to my '93 Heritage.

$105 - Santee 17" 1.25 diameter chrome apes
$13 - Heavy duty damper kit
$14 - Handlebar wiring harness extension kit
$195 - Barnett Stainless Steel throttle, idle, clutch cable kit +10" oversize
$33 - Russell Mach 3 universal brake line, 54"
$10 - 2 12mm x 7/16-24 banjo bolts
$9 - 12mm straight chrome banjo fitting
$9 - 12mm 90 degree chrome banjo fitting

$388 plus shipping.

The Santee bars are nice. They have 1" mounting for the handlebar clamp and 1" ends for the controls. The bars are pre-drilled and even have pull cables installed in them. I shipped them down here first so I could measure everything up before I ordered cables and lines. They feel really sturdy compared to 1" apes. Broke my heart to have to take them back off while I wait for the rest of the parts.

My lengths are a little long because I plan on possibly putting a 2" riser on since I couldn't get the Santee in 18". Next month will be chrome handlebar controls which will tack on another $300 give or take.

Now you know how much the dealer will be taking on in labor and margins on parts when you get a quote.
