Default Air cleaner opinion ?

I recently upgraded to an FLSTC after my 3rd Sportster. I want to do some mods on a gradual basis:

K&N Air cleaner
V&H Straight Shots slip-on's (quiet baffles) & Fuel-Pak
Oil cooler

Anybody have expereince with the K&N RK-3909 & RK-3910 cleaners ? Is the 3910 worth the extra bulk & bucks ? I've seen the CFM specs and can't tell if the mods I'm planning will need the extra air-flow of the 3910.

The HD site claims that a chip reflash is necessary with their air cleaners, but I can't see why increasing air-flow needs a reflash ????

Thanks,

If you use a FuelPak no re flash is necessary. I prefer the round ac and a complete new setup with an open filter as you will get more flow out of it. More air flow equals more power.

I run an UltraCool fan assisted oil cooler on my fatboy and it works great. When the bike hits a certain temp the fan kicks on to cool it even more. Pipes are a personal choice but it soudns like a good setup you have planned. I can also get all of this stuff for you at a discount. PM or email me at drew@drvtwin.com if you want pricing please.

First off, your bike can only use as much air as it can actually take in so putting a real hi performance air cleaner on an engine that can't use it is just a waste. Unfortunately, the EPA mandates that the MoCo chokes the air intake and exhaust so that the motors can't even breath so you do want to change the stock air filter out to a K&N that breathes better and mod the pipes also.

The reason you have to rejet your carb or change your injection settings is that the motor can take in more air than when stock and therefore with the same fuel settings it is running leaner.

As said, supervise air cleaner not needed unless you've done major mods like cam change. Call Fuel MOTO or Dr. V-twin and discuss with them. They will set you up with exactly what u want and need.

Been planning an air cleaner upgrade myself. After looking at all the big $$ options out there, decided it wasn't worth $300+ for an air filter that, depending on who you talk to, might be great or crap. Heavy breathers, those fancy round covers etc might look cool, but all I want is more air. Looked around the K&N site and decided on the HD-0700. It's 1" deeper than the stage 1 filter and fits the backplate. Got it for $50 plus a $20 rain sock, and I just plan on painting or fabing up a round cover for the face of it. Simple, cheap and just as effective.

First....so long as you do not restrict the intake below that of the narrowest opening to the throttle body...choice of A/C hardly matters. Mods you are making don't demand "extra flow." Max flow is determined by the narrowest diameter leading into the throttle body...unless you pressurize the air (s/c or turbo) you are ok with OEM intake...but...like most of us...the football looks like shtt and you gotta make it look different.

The OEM setup drives the bike toward the lean side to meet EPA regs. Opening up exhaust and intake will pull towards lean a bit more. As far as I know...the MOCO ECM is open loop and can't accommodate your mods without dropping in a new map. HD stealerships with a dyno can do this for you...but .... I think they will mostly only do it if you buy SE items. You will most likely need a competent a/m ECM.

IMO the K&N is worth the $$ because its washable and reusable.

Read in here awhile back any Hi-flow A/c will flow more air then any stock to mild build HD motor can use.. wont even begin to get close till BB kit and head porting comes into the picture.

Dont' know what the #'s of filter Ur talking about. I just did the SE A/C and then replaced it with a real lifetime K&N filter, Harley's SE filter is made or it used to be made by K&N but its not the same.... Used to be about 17$ more. thinking it was $45 or so two yrs ago anyway.

Suprised nobody has said anything about the ness big sucker kit.

http://www.easternperformance.com/pr...er-Kit-Stage-I

you can get those with the chrome back plate, looks sharp! I used the HD raw aluminum one on my nightrain, and on my wifes superglide I threw on the ness kit...

no problem with either so far. course I run the open filter on mine and a rain sock.

Far as the decorative cover, I used Mark, (story808) he made me a kickass custom one for I think just 30 bucks? don't remember anymore... huh, I'll see if I have a photo.

crap, all I can find is this old photo, hard to see it. Had him match my brake rotors, superspoke design, and it says "Harley DAvidson Night train" in a circle. guy does awesome work.

Thanks for all the good info. I have to narrow it down between the K&N and a round filter w/a nice cover. Either way I do think that the increased air flow will help, even if I don't do the pipes right away.

Thanks all,
Greg
