But if your planning on baking the new paint on I would remove the fuel pump.
You 'should', according to HD, get a new set of screws/gasket to reinstall it after the paints done.
The other thing that will need to be removed is the gas gauge.
If you don't have a manual already, this kind of thing is the best reason you'll ever get for buying one.
thats it man. i dont mined the money, i wana do it right. i know the fuel pump is in there and i guess that was the basis of the question. how do you get that chit out? im not a miser, but why pay someone when/if i can do it myself.

Get hold of the manual for your year bike as the procedure may not be the same as it is for another year bike and quite frankly I have no idea how to get your particular pump setup out.
I don't know how to get mine apart either, but I do know (don't ask how I know) you need to be careful of the high pressure line from the tank to the injectors as it is very easy to break.

Who's going to do your paint job for the cost of the paint? A good friend I hope and what color are you think. I'm thinking of a retro paint scheme for my black and silver 03 but people say I will ruin the "anniversary edition" value is I do that.

Ya you cant paint over the anniversary edition. Find some used tins and paint those. Save the 100ths.

If I can pull all the guts out of the tank, anyone can do it. If you follow the steps in the manual, it's pretty straight forward.
