Default Air cleaner option for the do-it-yourselfer

I do alot of air cleaners for Sportsters. A CV is a CV is a CV, so, this is what I did for the Deluxe.

There are alot of nice options for purchase already. Most of which are pretty cool but the simple fact that they're mass produced makes them less attractive (to me). AND, I don't see much of the price justified at all.

I got this from Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

This from Jegs

http://www.jegs.com/i/K%26amp%3BN/599/E-3200/10002/-1

This is what the backside of the backing plate looks like

I removed the flange and small spout

If you're using one of those inexpensive carb mounts that come with the crank case vent hoses you could simply route those houses to the spout to keep it clean (and not use the filter the kit comes with) but the carb mount I have has integrated breathers so I removed it and will be plugging the hole.

Marked the holes I needed to drill

Mounted

Buying the K&N filter isn't necessary but I like them because I don't need to shop for replacements later. Here's a pic of the K&N next to the filter the air cleaner comes with

With the cover on

Just a few minutes and a few bucks. the chrome is nice and if you're careful you can do it without marks but I don't like chrome so I'll be powdercoating this one when I disassemble the rest of the bike for the same treatment.

Thanks!

OK, now I'm officially envious of your skills (and workshop)

Can't wait to see more of your "fabricate it yourself" threads while you're working on the bike.

Nice, dig the louvers.

Also like the shape of those fishtails.. Post up some pics when you get to those, I would like to see the finished product.

Looks good, I was just thinking of trying something like that myself. I am not finding the look I want from the available after-market a/c covers. If i find what I want in another configuration I'll try to custom road as well.
I was wondering how a custom one would flow for a FI motor though.

I do similar air cleaners for carbed and fuel injected. There's no difference. If you have a fueler or are jetted it's all the same. And in regards to Sportsters, they even mount exactly the same. Not sure about BT's but I don't see why it would be different.

Nice work man.
I've been stuck trying to figure out a nice A/C cover also.
You've got me thinking now.
