Head Grease
So, I drive 40 miles to my local HD super store (my local dealer was run out for being to small) to get some SP steering head grease. The super store parts guys looked at me like I had two heads. They don't have it or know what it is. So what do you use to grease your soft tails steering head??

Grease. If you really have to I would use thick moly wheel bearing grease. It's just a set of opposed tapered bearings. Remember the bearings are only packed at the factory. All that open tube area is not packed so the first time it takes a lot and I bet you will need to wipe its chin a few times. I personally think the original factory packing will last 50K. Get you a gun tube at waltmart or AutoZone

Plus one.....We've found a lot of head nuts loose....and a lot of steering head bearings dry from the factory. I've cured a few HD clunks by applying spec torque and 200 hits of grease. Hard to believe....but true.

Bearing grease
As usual, everyone has their own preference for any lub including stearing head lub. At least those who lub their bikes as required. I prefer and use lucas grease...specifically "red and tacky #2". With it's 540 degree drop point i don't have to constantly swipe the motor. It stays in place. It is a technical blend of lithium and polymers with "anti-wear/anti seize" agents.
The key here is to fully lub the head by pumping enough grease to come out the bottom and top. There is no seal to worry about rupture. Get it full, wipe it down good and check a few times along the way until it all settles in.
It works for me !!
