I do a lot of long distance ultralight back packing. I can fit all my gear on one luggage rack. I'll post pictures later, when I'm home.
You need WAY, WAY less than you think you need. It's all a matter of how much or little comfort you are willing to accept, and how much you are willing to invest in good gear that is light and packs down small. And if you are willing to learn how to use it.

I do lots of long distance hiking (Colorado Trail last year, 500 miles) and most of you would be surprised by the technological advances in camping gear over the past 5 or so years. You can get a 2 person tent, sleeping bag, and pad for way under 10 pounds and into a relatively small backpack. There are plenty of online sites with additional info. What works for long distance thru hiking also works for motorcycle camping -- although you have a lot more room on your cycle and you don't have to carry your camping equipment 15-20 miles a day or so. GoLite equipment, Steripen water filters, and titanium equipment are just some of the recent advances. And, the Mountain House meals are actually much better than 10+ years ago. Especially the spaghetti!

Don't ride the FB that far but ride the RKC with a sissy bar and rack... carrying tent, camp chair, sleeping bag, air mattress, collapsible cooler, propane power burner, pillow, hatchet, hiking food packets and misc stuff in the bag on the rack... clothes in the T-bag behind me. Carry a 30 oz bottle of xtra gas just in case...
