Hi all, friend needs a trans(5 spd) for his 89 softail custom. Just wondering what other models and years are compatible so I can hunt on ebay.

Depends....the books say 85-89 but Harley usually changed stuff mid year...I know early 85s were 4 speeds. Look at the primary and see if it has the solenoid sticking out like a 4 speed... if it does that's what fits. You could change the primary and use a 90-2000 trans which would probably be best...because the 85-89 stuff is not well supported in the aftermarket. Post a pic of the primary.
