I have a 2000 Road King Police bike,, the oil light flickers at idle and while running,, no engine noise. I know one sensor has been replaced by previous owner. I've been a car mechanic for 32 years, just never owned a Harley before.
I found online where Harleys overall are known to have low oil pressure problems and that site sells an adjustable kit to raise the pressure. The procedure is similar to raising the pressure on a small block Chevy. So I can do this.
The first order of busness is to get a Manual or repair CD.
Can someone tell where the Oil Sending Unit is on a 2000 Big Twin 88 so I can check pressure this morning?

ok, motors out and the piece of metal came from a main bearing. The engine was making no noise prior to the oil light coming.
Shouldn't a harley engine get more than 30000 miles before this happens? So now whats a fair price to have it rebuilt?

I paid 1500 to have my 87 evo motor rebuilt with a SE 3 cam and 10 to 1 pistons.

Entire books have been written on the Forensics of reading failed parts; and from that analysis determining the root cause, is probably something only someone with their hands on all of the parts that came from your engine, as well as a lot of experience reading these sorts of "Tea Leaves" can tell for sure. In my experience most mechanics will speculate wildly. Some speculation is based on science and quite a bit (if not most of it) is based on conjecture and pseudoscience . . . the best thing to do is to rebuild it, making sure everything is done correctly with good quality parts and move on from there.

Main bearing or Cam bearing? Mine lost the Cam bearing after the privious owner had a performance Cam installed without changing the Cam bearing to a Torrington, Bearing went out, Cam wobbled, sheared some teeth off the oil pump drive gear, sheared the keyway....1,800.00 all better.......
