I have a softail and a glide and I ride the hell outta both, but if I'm headed out for 300+ I take the stereo, cruise control, fairing.

My softail is by far my favorite and is more my personality, but for longer rides theres nothing like a glide.

Jaburg,
I don't know why I put you in quote haha sorry.

Ya no doubt. I get tired (exhausted) just looking at my bike. I think you would enjoy the ride either way. Whatever you decide...have fun and be safe.

I rented an 08 SG to ride from Ft. Riley KS, to Sturgis and back. Best thing I ever did. I don't do long rides often, so I stick with my lovely bonz, but the SG is a fun cushy ride. You wont regret it.

Im 38 and traded my 09 Ultra for a 11 fatboy lo, loved the ultra but no personality and didnt have the time or money to make it worth having to ride long trips. However, i rode my triumph speed triple 200 miles and spent 7 hours in a hospital with my fatherinlaw when i got there and the next morning 200 miles back home. wasnt tired or worn out but the point is, it depends on what you want. the touring bikes are nice for long trips but if your not doing a lot of long trips, dont waste your money and get a softail, they ride great.

dont do it you will never go back.i had nothing but softails until i was 38.i reffered to the baggers as geezer glides.never wanted one and i could hang with the older guys on long rides just fine.got on a road king and purchased one the next week.the ride is way more comfortable and the bikes really are more suited for highway riding.i now have a electra glide with the stereo and all.**** i just realized i am getting old.ride nothing but softails until you are 50,they have more personallity.i still have a bad boy and a big dog ,not a old man yet.ride whitch ever one you want its all about the ride

I have a Softail Custom and an Ultra. Have rented RKs, SGs, and Heritages. SG has a short windshiled so you will get a lot of wind. They call them Ultras for a reason. SG w/ 103 is sweet though. Want comfort, go Ultra, want nice ride around town, the SG w/ 103. Heritiage is nice, but no tunes. Any way you go, you will enjoy. I agree, rent something different.

ALL OF THEM!

But seriously, I have a softail so I am biased, but I'd say a softail. They are the best looking and I love the way it rides.

I had a bagger (not a Harley) but same premise. I liked the ride but it didn't feel like a motorcycle to me. I love the pain of a long ride. It makes me feel alive!

I'd have to try something different for sure. Kind of depends if you're riding double too. Have a good trip.
