Default Tires ???

I only get about 6-7000 miles on my Dunlop D407 200mm rear tire on my 07 Night Train. I don't ride hard at all. I was looking at my friends 1200 sporty. He has Dunlop D401 tires on it front and rear and has 7500 miles on the bike. The rear tire looks BRAND NEW and it is the original tire. Should I consider the D401 when I need to replace again? I know it is a harder compound, but as I said I don't ride hard.
What are some thoughts? (wet weather, corning stopping etc...) Will I notice any differences?
Also the price on the D401 is much less money and I would also cut down the install $$$ seeing it should last at least twice as long. Go Figure.

Because of like you said. The compound is harder so you'll possibly notice a traction difference(no leanin' deep into the twisties!)

I got about 9800 on my D401's. They seem to handle well in all conditions, but when it comes time to change both tires, I'll look at Elite 3's or others.

I only got 4900 miles on my first rear 200 on my LO. Harley replaced it under my tire warranty for free with the same Dunlop. This new tires has about 2000 miles on it now and it's already showing wear. Next time I'll be trying a different brand. No way I should be replacing that big tire every 5000 miles.

Air pressure plays a big role in how long your tires will last, as does the compound of the tire. I far prefer a stickier tire to a harder one. I have run varying brands and usually get about 10K out of each rear regardless of teh compound. Unless I run them at a lower pressure. I run my rears at 40-44 psi depending on brand.

I would think a 09 or 10 1200 Sportster could be driven hard and into the turns (twisties)
I guess I could be wrong.
I know that tire has been used by Harley on lots of models for years.
Maybe they "HD" sell more tires with the D407 than the D401 and the dealers install more.

Judging from all the threads about this same subject, and my own experience, The 200 tires seem to wear out faster. Like Drew said, pressure has a lot to do with it. I got 7,000 out of my stock tire and get around 6,000 on Metzler 880's. There is a guy on theses forums with a night train that gets 10,000 out of the Dunlaps. Every rider is different.

I keep the tire pressure set at the factory spec. I check it frequently especially knowing the short wear factor of this tire (D407). And if I road it any easier, the thing would be parked.
I was just asking if it would be safe to put a D401 on the rear of my train. I can't see why not.
I know on cages we put just about anything, but on two wheels I was not sure.

I only get 6-7k out of a 200mm rear.
Seems like they just don't last as long as smaller tires.
I know the 200mm Avon Cobras I usually run start out with less tread depth than their smaller tires.
