A lot of Dyna riders have done that after member WS6 Formula started it a few years ago. The one in my sig pic is mounted on a plain round cover, or it can be run open. (Edit: Mudpuddle did these for a bunch of guys a couple of years back, but he no longer does them for others)

Here's a couple of threads (the second one with video):

Also, member Pig in a blanket stuck just the trim ring on a round chrome cover for a similar effect.

Default A/C Insert carved out. huzzah.

from the typical football cover:

to a nice clean cutout:

I followed these directions up until where you start cutting:
https://www.hdforums.com/forum/2909122-post642.html

since I don't have a die grinder, I used a Dremel tool @ 30,000RPM with a reinforced cutting blade, which ran through the aluminum of the cover like butter.. and since I don't have an angle grinder, or a drill press (though my neighbor does but he was at work).. i filed down the edges and evened it all out by hand.. it actually was pretty easy and took maybe 2 hours total.. since i was doing it all by hand and all.. then shot the edges up with some close-as-can-be color matching engine enamel to prevent rust.. i thought she turned out quite good actually..

edit..Ps thanks for the link Dawg Rider..

Looks awesome. I think I'm going to start on that one tonight. What air filter do you end up using when doing this modification? Do you have a part #

Thanks,

Im running the Arlen Ness Big Sucker Stage I, and its just a standard K&N filter on there, PN HD-0800

http://www.amazon.com/HD-0800-Replac.../dp/B000FGCYT4

and as long as you have a steady hand, the mod is really easy to do.. the aluminum cuts like buttah..

Thought about it.. but I kind of like how it stands out like that..especially since throughout the rest of the bike are the aluminum bolt heads
