Painted exhaust shields - anybody done this?
I have a 2009 X Bones and want to know if anyone has ever taken the OEM harley stock exhaust shields from the headerpipe back and painted them black. I want to do this while leaving the actual exhaust pipes chrome. How did it turn out - post pics. What paint was used and how did you do it. Thanks

I painted my stock sportster heat shields and drilled the ends to give it a machine gun type look. They came out awesome.I used VHT high heat ceramic flat black and finished it with VHT high heat ceramic satin clear.Just scuffed up the chrome.and sprayed as per instructions on the cans. They say not to use a primer just scuff and spray.I will dig them out out the attic for pics and list the paint part #'S you need later today or tomorrow.

I have been seriously thinking about doing my V&H 2-1 pipe in black also.
I have done it before on a sport bike and it came out really well.
Did the VHT flame proof flat black on the mid pipe which gets HOT, and did the VHT gloss black on the muffler.
Rode it for 14,000 miles and never had an issue.
I would think on the shields, which don't get as hot as the mid pipe, it should work well.

I painted the heat shields on my Sportster 3 or 4 years ago. Just scratched up the chrome with sandpaper and did the in flat black with high temp spray paint from home depot. When I traded the bike in two years later and 16000 miles they still looked great never had to touch them up, I also drilled some one inch holes.
