Default HD Patent Emblem on Springer Shock

Have a question for all you HD historians - I have a 2009 Bones and always loved the springer front end (who doesn't), and in many books and photos of old original springer front ends there was a patent emblem on the shock in the middle of the springer set up. The XBones does not come with this emblem (nor do any other current springer models) so I added my own because I always thought it was a really cool detail and made the springer look authentic. I picked up the metal emblem at my dealer for $10.00 - they go for $30 on ebay if you can find one.

My question for you historians is - was this emblem an original feature on early springers or were these added by owners after the fact as a way of customizing the front end.
Appreciate any insight you may have.
I have included a pic below to show how the emblem looks. I love it

I think the first year to use that sticker on a springer shock was 88...before that they were used on oil tanks.
