If your planning on changing the cable I would change the factory tranny oil for a 75/90W or 75/140W synthetic gear oil like Mobile 1 at the same time. As well as check the vent tube for clogs.
That will eliminate any possibility of a contaminate in the oil causing it to foam up and pushing up the cable.
Also a point to be aware of is that when you install the new cable be VERY careful tightening it up or you could break it off in the cover.
Its a hollow tube and very easy to break but if you put an open end wrench on the cable end and only use hand pressure to turn the cover on until it stops you'll be fine.
Whatever you do, DON'T try to prove how strong you are or you WILL break the cable and maybe wreck the cover as well.
There is or should be an O-ring on the end of the cable to seal it off so overdoing it is counterproductive, but a thin film of Vaseline on it and the threads will help ensure it goes together easy and seals properly.
