Default Mustang Solo & Pillion

Hello everyone - first post and I will do all the introductions and everything as soon as I get time, but I was just hoping for a little advice before I part with some hard earnt cash.

I am considering a Mustang vintage solo and pillion seat for my '05 FXSTI. I have seen another thread discussing the wide/standard versions, and need to go with the wide pillion for the sake of my wife, but I was wondering if anyone has put the wide pillion and standard solo together. Does it look odd with pillion and solo being the same width? I am concerned that the wide solo is just too wide having seen the pictures posted in the other thread.

Any opinions?

PS it's my birthday today and the bike is in for servicing on Monday, and I am hoping to order the seat when I go in for the spanner work. Birthday present to myself - no doubt the first of very many as I have only had the bike for a couple of months.

I've got the wide studded seat with the standard size passenger pillon -- here's a pic - it looks about the same exact size as the stock pillon for the Heritage...

Hope this helps...

Steven or Hogaholic,

Is that a recessed rear pillon to make room for back rest? Does it compromise passenger room at all? I have the mustang dual tour but am thinking of switching to the solo w/ packrest and pillon combo. Any advise?

The rear pillon is recessed a very little bit to make room for the driver backrest. It hasn't compromised much in the way of passenger room - it's still got lots of room!

Thanks. I didnt know how far the recess went back and if it looked odd with backrest off. I think I will give it a try.

I have the same seat combo, and it doesn't get any softer. But it does keep the nether regions from becoming painful on long rides. I have a sheepskin pad on mine that I got from Alaska Leather. Top quality, cool in summer and warm in winter, and it does take the edge off the seat's firmness. This one's on its third bike.

Perhaps you can see it in this pic:

I can see why you're asking.. That rear seat is BIG.. Having just purchased my wide solo and wide rear.. I'd say it depends if you're going to do a lot of two-up riding or if you're going to run the bike with just the solo quite a bit. If the latter is the case, it really doesn't matter what kind of rear if you only install it for two-up trips.. If the rear is going to stay on all the time, then looks might be more important. That wide rear seat is 14" wide I think.. Not sure from memory but that would be pretty close to the width of the standard solo rider seat.. Pretty much depends on the comfort of the passenger.. I'd say the wide rear seat should be pretty darn comfy for a lot of miles.

On a sidenote, after getting some riding in on my wide solo.. as wide as it is, it rides a lot like a stock seat but extremely EXTREMELY more comfortable. It's got room to slide around on and adjust position, which is key for comfort.. even the best seat if you can't move around a little, will kill ya after a while. Once you get over the fact that it's a big seat, you'd love either the wide or standard I'd say.. I'm 6'1", 250+ lbs so you could say the wide seat was a good choice for me. The combination of the new seat plus lowering the bike about 1" has been great.. I'm still going to drop it about another 1/2" though.. The seat smoothes out the bumps of what was previously a rough ride quite nicely.
