The ride which inspired me into that direction in here HDF (the fisrt one I remember running fat radial spokes) was Dinger's (Dan) Heritage. Sweet looking ride, he slammed the rear put on some fat spokes 18-21 and crazy wide beach bars. I have a couple of pics of Dan's ride I'll find them for you.
History-wise? How the **** should I know?
Mimo.

Oh yeah, and my gangster softail! I had the apes first, then did the wheels, and then the fishtails which have since been changed out due to my OCD.
These were the Ultima up and out pipes, the second set after the fishtails, now I am non the third post fishtail pipes. These were the Wild 1 Chubbies I put on back in 2006.

A lot of that style comes from the California low rider scene...guys starting building bikes in the same style they built there old bombs...it's just an evolution from bomb to bike...
Take a look at low rider bicycles as well...they all have white walls, bit front wheels, apes, ect...low rider cars, motorcycles, and bicycles...they all short of share the same styling here in Cali...
Here are just a few pictures representing that style...

Funny thing is that out of the thousands of Harleys I see in New England, I've never seen this SoCal style softail other than on this forum. I love the style, and I'm going to try to do my own take on it.
The problem with New Englands is the hills and steep driveways. I'll have to keep the pipes short. Or I could just scrape them....
