Congrats on joining the 'softer' side. Your not going to be disappointed with the Custom.
Its already got most of the 'goodies' on it and what has to be one of if not THE best seat ever put on a Harley.

Just one word of caution, that nice looking fat tire out back can get you into trouble if your not paying attention.
Don't try to ride it like its your old Sporty by twisting the throttle hard while its still leaning over coming out of a tight turn, like a street corner. Especially if the road is wet or it has those damn tar strips the NYSDOT uses to fill cracks with.
Where your old Sporty with its smaller engine and lighter weight would let you get away with silly stuff like that, the Custom's longer wheel base and bigger engine will try to make that fat tire slide out or, on the tar strips, skip sideways on you.
Ordinarily its not something to be too concerned with, but like everything else, going too far can get you into more trouble than you want any part of.

Good luck with it and ride safe, where in upstate NY are you and where the hell are the PIC's, you MUST post pic's of any new bike, its the law you know.

I am on my fourth rear tire on an 07 Softail custom, Factory lasted 11k, Avon Cobra lasted 10K, Dunlop 205 lasted 6k. My point being that it is all in the tire, not the bike.

So is tire #4 a factory tire? You are the first person I have heard of that got the factory to last beyond 7000 miles. I'll look when I get home but I thought the factory tire was a dunlop 205. I would be thrilled to get 11000.

I wonder why it's discontinued with it being such a comfortable bike to ride? It's also one of the better looking bikes.

I'm 6'4" 270 and the Ness extensions work great. Well worth it. And the FXSTC is probably the most comfortable bike for a large rider.

I moved from an Ultra Classic to a Softail Custom. I love it.

I'll testify to that!
When I first switched from the Sporty to my NT, I was amazed at how I could actually lean the NT over just as much as the Sporty and not have trouble pulling it back up.
BUT....

I definitely had to re-learn corners and getting back on the throttle coming out of them with a 200 tire and the extra wheelbase.

And another beware: If you see cars that were recently in an accident, double check the ground in front of you before pulling a hard left turn........there just MIGHT be a patch of antifreeze. And you just MIGHT bruise the hell out of your foot trying to not dump it after said 200 tire goes flying out to the side at 25mph.

I don't remember what the factory was, but it was not a 205. I am trying a Dunlop Roadsmart this time because I got a new one for $120.00 at a clearance sale. It is to soon to tell the mileage yet but I am not looking for much because it really grabs the road. It is made for the sport touring bike like the Yamaha FJ's etc. But for $120.00 I will try it. As far as it being discontinued I am as mystified as you, I am sure they have something up their sleeves for the future as the Standard and the custom both represent what a motorcycle should look like. I noticed that they put the fx front end on that new 883 super low. It looks great on the Sporster.

To the OP, You are going to love the Custom, It is a great all around bike and equally at home around town or on the open road. The ness 3" Extensions are a must and they are the best mod I have done so far. I am currently working on a bigger mod but it is a surprise for now. Happy trails and ride safe.

I have 9800+ on mine right now and its still got legal tread, but just barely. I really do need to start looking around for a new one and a front tire to go with it. I would like something with a bit more grip to it and the original isn't going to last much longer than the rear anyway.

I didn't bruise my foot, but I did Charley horse the hell out of my right leg doing much the same thing on some water/oil.

You are correct, I broke the law, here are some pictures:

I bought the bike from O'Tooles in Wurstboro, NY, about 30 miles from my summer home.

My rear tire is a D407, any track record on those?

The Ness forward control extensions are next, found them on EBAY new in box for about $165-$170 shipped. The Custom really works well for me, it seems like every upgrade I did to the sporty is already there stock on the Custom (except the Screamin Eagle pipes, LOL).
