Front Brake Lever Fails to Activate Brake Light

I just noticed that when i engage the front brake the brake light does not come on. I took the lever assembly apart and found a small switch that is encased in rubber. When I move the switch around with my finger the brake light flickers. Has anyone else had one of these go bad? I'll go to the dealer tomorrow to get a new switch. Hopefully I'll be able to buy just the switch and not the whole assembly.
If anyone has had experience with this and has some advise, I'd appreciate hearing what you have to say.
Thanks,
Hiflyer

From HD,
Do not remove or install the master cylinder assembly
without first positioning a 5/32-inch (4 mm) thick insert
between the brake lever and lever bracket. Removing or
installing the master cylinder assembly without the insert
in place may result in damage to the rubber boot and
plunger on the front stoplight switch.

Just an aside, and I'm not advocating it for everybody, but I've never had my front brake hooked into my brake light on any bike I've owned. When Johnny Law comes creeping up on me from behind I like the option of slowing down (if I need to) without the brake light drawing unwanted attention. Of course the rear brake is hooked into the brake light for when there's normal traffic behind me . . .

They tend to last 20-30K around town. I got three brake lights going and that gets them. They are on e-bay (look just like Harleys and I would guess same people must supply Harley only difference I could see was spring clip was SS and not spring bronze like my old original) Cost about $12 including shipping. I have used two.

WHAT?? WHY?? Man, we are going to read about you some day and it not going to be good. Be careful. Some times around here I need a yellow flashing light screwed to the top of my helmet. JUST MY OPINION

have a totally different problem (still) I didn't realize my rear brake light worked the opposite way... it never goes off... I realized that after changing grips and reading through the forum... so alas, I thought I had messed up the switch, opened the assembly again and ripped it out... the problem persists! so my guess is the rear brake switch is messed up... haven't had the time to take a look at it and doubt it can be fixed... have to order a new one soon...
