I have real wide bars and I think the leverage that they create anoys me at slow speeds. Maybe it would help when hitting bumps on the highway also

Have you checked your Fall Away...maybe your running a little loose...

I can see where you coming from John, but thats not what a steering damper is for; hence the puzzled responses. A steering damper is to protect you from getting into a tanksplapper (Very fast lock to lock oscillation of the bars at speed) and the subsequent crash.

The geometry/weight/speed/braking performance of our bikes is that this something that is extremely likely to happen. If anything a damper will ruin any feel you have already got
which is common on standard equipped bikes.

If something not right suggest you change the bars / check steering neck bearings

Yep these bikes' forks are way too heavy and have too much rake to need a damper.

Thanks for the replies.
The neck bearings are good.
I am not worried about tank slap.
I thought the dampner would make it feel smoother, more controlled at slow speeds.
The bars are wide and the tire is a low profile marathon 880, maybe too much leverage on a hard tire for my taste.

I understand what you are after. Most steering dampers do not work at low speeds, they move fairly freely. They are designed to prevent very rapid movments which cause "tank slappers". I don't think it will work for what you want it to.

Default agreed

I have to agree with the rest on the fact you more than likely dont need a damper on a Harley however...most new dampers now a days are fully adjustable. I just put a new Bitubo Damper on my Ducati and it adjusts from totally free moving like there is nothing there all the way to holly **** is it ever hard to turn the bars at all. You " could " install an adjustable type like that and then play with the settings to see if you can get what you are looking for. Most good dampers are not cheap and then you would need some type of custom mount for it, could get expensive. I would go with what others say and maybe look at new bars. Then again a high end cool looking damper on a Harley would for sure look unique !!!

2 cents.
