I get that now and then. It's been happening a lot less since I switched to Amsoil in the primary and tranny (engine too, but it doesn't apply in this case).

Cheers!

same as others, happens here and there... i found that if i move the bike a bit while shifting into first it goes smoother but other than that maybe check/adjust the clutch cable

Mine does it sometimes also, thought it was just me. I find that if I am a little more aggressive when tapping it into first it doesn't happen. But if I just kind of push it in it may not go even though the neutral light goes out. I just try to always tap it a little quicker, that clunk is one of the best sounds, it means I'm ready to ride. The clunk is good.

Had the same problem with my new 06 Fatty. Very embarassing and occasionally dangerous when riding and thinking I'm in first and she stalls on me at a light. Took it into HD at about 500 miles and they said yeah that happens, they adjusted something. Took five minutes. Doesn't happen nearly as much now, maybe 90% better but still occasional. Due for the 1000 mile service next week so I'll tell them to do more of what they did.

It's not excusive to Fatboys.

My 91 Evo 5 speed Sportster does it too. Rarely. My 67 Ironhead 4 speed did it in 72, rarely.

Should get less frequent with more miles as the gears wear in. It's part of owning a Harley, it's got chracter.

Hey Broken Leg, I've got a 91 sportster just like yours, same color. Mine is a 1200, is yours?

Agreed, same problem on my 2005 Fatboy. I learned very early to never trust the little green N. lol If I THINK it's in 1st/3rd with the light off it could easily be in Neutral and vice versa. I can actually apply pressure to the shifter (while in neutral) and move the light off and on without ever getting into gear.

As far as the CLUNK I have checked with a few peole and it's perfectly normal for Harley's. It's mostly 1st & 2nd gear...and any downshifting I do. lol
