It's worth it. I won't let the dealer touch my bike. It came with the back tire out of alignment right off the floor! Fantastic work, them dealers.
+1 you can do everything yourself and save the money. It'll give you a good chance to learn more about you bike. And that will save you a lot of money in the future.

If you don't want them to charge you for the oil or you don't want them to use what they supply, you can bring your own, and ask them to use it. That way they only charge you for labor.
yes what he said, most dealers will let you bring your own oil.

I use Bel Ray for the trans and no wine or clank and I can find neutral. I use Motor Factory® Primary Case Lube in the primary. because Amsoil has gone up so much I just switched to Mobil 1 for vtwin and it works as good. I have 52,000 miles in about 3 years and it runs great and no debris in the oil changes.

Just got back from having the dealer service mine and very happy with what they did. The clutch cable was a little stiff and found out that was part of the service and now is very smooth. It was worth the $250.00 going with the synthetic oil, but I'll start doing the work myself from now on.

Do you change the primary/trans at this time also? I was planning on doing that at the same time. What recommendations for the trans/primary oil?

Going to do it myself and not pay the dealer $125.00 for 3 qts of oil and a filter.
$125 ??? that's a deal. they want $375 here in NY.
what dealer? May be worth the ride.

I called dealer (a) and was told $200.00 for everything including synthetic. Then called the dealer where I bought the bike from a month ago and was told $325.00 for the same service. They told me to do it myself and stop by one afternoon and they would adjust the clutch cable for free as it only takes a few minutes. I guess the fat boy clutch cable goes out of adjustment in the first 1000 miles per the dealer. Once adjusted it should be good as it is a one time thing again per the dealer.

I wrote $125.00 but it was $200.00. That was synthetic oil and the 3 holes and included the 1 1/2 hour labor. The $125.00 was for something else for the bike. Sorry, my bad. I called Seaford HD in Seaford, DE. They said $200.00 but asked what bike first so I am guessing it might depend on the bike. Mine is a 2010 fat boy.
Hope that helps you out.

Almost all clutch cables need to be adjusted after the first 1000, chances are your throttle cable and primary will need adjusting as well. i went with regular oil, it's easier to goto to synthetic if i ever see the need. If you stay on top of your service intervals regular oil is fine.

I don't know what the difference is between a 2009 and 2010, but the dealer told me $250.00 the first time I called for the service and when I set the appointment I was told $325.00. When asked he said something about the year difference. I don't know if there is really a difference between the two or he just was trying to jack up the price. Also, one dealer was $70.00 cheaper for the same service. So it never hurts to shop around.

This is my opinion. I had the dealer do the 1k service and it was worth the money! They do more than just change the oil, which i didnt know. when i picked up the bike i felt a difference as soon as i pulled away. I will change the oil myself from now on but i dont regret taking it to the dealer for the 1k. And i changed to synthetic.
