Default Intermittent horn

'01 Softail Std. 67K miles. Purchased new.
While cruising the lovely streets of Manhattan the other day, I attempted to use the horn. Instead of the usual loud "honk", I got a low dull "hoot".
Certainly not enough especially in city traffic.
First time this ever happened. Conditions were dry and around 85 F. The problem went away, returned and today all is normal. Everything else is normal including lights, voltage etc.
Any suggestions on what caused this will be greatly appreciated.

Could have been the result of washing or a bug of some kind getting in there. I have seen them go out temporarily when a water puddle was hit pretty hard. Wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again.

The horn is probably touching the cover and will not allow it to "vibrate". I put a washer behind the mounting point to space the cover out a bit.

Happened to me once, 2000 fatboy. Turned out to be top motor mount, where the horn is mounted and grounded. With the mileage you have, might want to check.
