Default 01 heritage steering lock

Is it common for the steering lock on these frames to F up or has someone tampered with mine in the past? My ign. key will fit into the lock register but you cannot turn it.By the owners manual info the lock is supposed to be turned to the left to lock, well the inner notch is turned 90 degrees to the left now and the head is not locked,I would have to insert the key and turn it to the right90 degrees to get the inner and outer notch to align up.Anyone???Anyone???

I don't know about your '01 but to lock the fork on my bike, you have to turn the key clockwise or to the right. Also, make sure the handle bars are turned all the way to the low side of the bike or to the left. If that doesn't work, try to move the handle bars slightly and see if the key will turn. The handle bars have to be in a specific position for the fork lock to work.

It is possible that the ignition has been changed which would give the fork lock and ignition different keys.

I guess it is possible it has been changed. But the key will go in and you can press it in, which makes me believe the reliefs around the outside of the key are at least deep enough in the right locations.I have seen in the past where coke machines will have keys and they will not even go into the slot due to the outer notches not being deep enough in certain locations. If yours has to be turned to the right to lock then I feel better, maybe I am not sticking out my tonque just right when I am trying.
