Oil Pressure Gauge Anyone!???
#12
I have a gauge kit on the way, and am wondering about the install. Is oil expected to make the trip from the sending unit to the Gauge? Or is the oil pressure pressure acting on air in the line between the unit and the gauge? Is there a check valve in the line to keep oil from running back when the engine is shut off? And is it necessary to prime the line with oil during the install? Maybe all this is addressed in the instructions. I've had experience with mechanical gauges before, but never installed one or wondered about it. If there is only air in the line, that might account for low readings at idle.

2010 96" Engine 11 - 14 PSI Hot Idle, 35 - 40 PSI Off Idle
Purchased 3 feet of Stainless Braided -4 Hose and 2 AN Fittings from Summit Racing.

-4 AN stainless straight swivel fittings P/N AER-FBM1101 @ $5.25 each = $10.50
-4 TPE Stainless Braid Hose (three feet) P/N AER-FCC0403 @ $16.95
Total cost for all $27.45. Oh, I also bought a straight NPT/Flare adapter for use at the Oil Pressure Sending Unit "T" at Orchard Supply for 0.99. Three feet of hose is more than enough to run the hose under the Cam Box along the frame and then up to the gauge or to come behind the Air Cleaner.
No leg burn issues.
Re: Other comment: Oil or Air in the line it doesn't matter. Pressure is Pressure . . . Ex: What weighs more: a pound of lead, or a pound of feathers?
