Default Shock Question

Looking to replace shocks on a 86 softail custom, I'm getting varying info, some applications show 84-88 models are the same and 89-99 the same, Then others show 84-99 all the same, anyone know what the break in years really is, and what is the difference, the 89 and up look the same as my 86.

Did you ever get this figured out? Is it possible to take a 2000 & up and just change the ends? Can it be done?

There is a difference in the 84-88 shocks. The body is shorter and diameter is smaller. Some companys still make that version, and there is also a narrow body adjustable that will fit 84-99. I think it's O. D. is 2". Don't think I'd buy them.
