I have the scavenger system and it works extremely well. I got it here:

Recently read something like this - cant find the link that explained it. You empty oil tank, install plug. Then add 1 qt of oil (their is also another qt left in the motor) and new filter. Turn bike on while looking down into oil filler tube. When clean oil starts to come out, turn bike off, drain oil, reinstall plug and fill with oil.

This way you will run a quart of dirty oil through a clean filter

Get a puck or make one it really not difficult

I usually just pull out the spark plugs and drain plug, put a garden hose in the rear plug hole, and wait till clear water comes out the front plug hole. Then I will pour 1/2 a quart of wesson cooking oil in each hole to keep the rust out...

Wait.. I think I am doing it wrong?

From memory. I read this somewhere on the 'net after reading about the puck system. This is free, other than the little bit of new oil wasted.

Softail- Warmed up first. Drain oil tank, replace drain plug and add 2qt (Not critical, as long as you remember how much you added). Pull the return line from tank (with plastic line removal tool) and connect a piece of 3/8 ID plastic hose long enough to drain into your catch pan.

Start the engine and let it run for about 10 sec. This allows clean oil to chase the passages up to the dirty filter. Change the filter and run it until clean(er) oil oil flows/ spits from the tubing- about 30 sec. Shut it off, re-connect the return line, top off the tank and move on.

A downside to clean oil is that it can be hard to see the oil level on the dipstick. I sometimes need a shop light and reading glasses.

In edit- Yes, I've used this method twice so far and it worked great for me.

Where do you get the tool to remove the return oil line from the oil tank? Is that a special tool or can you get one at an auto parts store?

I bought a set from HF a couple of years ago to remove Ford lines:

Any parts store will have them.
