Default Going Black ...

  • I took advice given below .. and I have ordered a shop manual for my bike .. it is in route.
  • I have all the parts ready to install now ... and I'd like to get going with it.
  • Can someone with hard experience tell me if I am going to have to install three gaskets for the covers noted below so I can go ahead and order them now. My local Harley dealership is not very helpful and they'd rather do the work themselves ... so ... if you know for sure ... can you please tell me if gaskets are required .. I AM A NEWBIE.
  • I'm swapping out a number of satin stainless finish covers for OEM black wrinkle finish to accentuate the finish contrasts on the bike. So far I am going to replace with the following
    • HD Part number 60717-07 Primary Cover
    • HD Part number 37135-06 Transmission Side Cover
    • HD Part number (not known) Cam/timing cover
  • Does anyone know if any gaskets or sealants are required for R&R of these covers?
  • Will I need to prepare for leaks of oil when I crack these open? How do I refill the oil lost? Where do I put the oil for the three covers if oil is lost when removing the satin cover?
Thanks much!

You will loose a bunch of oil when you pull the primary. There is a drain plug on the bottom of it. Not so much with the others. I would strongly suggest you get a factory service manual and use it prior to doing any work on your Scoot.

The drain plug for the primary is right below the derby cover . I'd think even after you drain the fluid out , there will still be some left over fluid that will run out when the cover comes off . The service manual says it hold 32 oz .

I did this on my Xbones, and you should plan on replacing all fluids, and all gaskets. Oils of various varieties will leak, and it never hurts to have fresh lubricants anyway.
