Sorry, I didn't see your post until Ricky posted it. If you got the coin do it, best mod I've done.

I use to ride the same way. When I got my engine gaurd I positioned my highway pegs to where my heels are still on the boards and my top 3rd of my boot is on the pegs. Sounds wierd I know, but it really works for comfort and I can move my boot all the way onto the pegs also and use them as was intended.
I would say, from how you set your feet, that the set up I just did puts our feet in the same general area. difference being, I can shift/brake w/o moving my feet... But you get to keep your boards, and you have a crashbar.
Your sled is waay more sick, so you win.

I really recommend the Ness setup, my local HD had it in stock... 199.99 (yes, it is 179.99 at Ness' website, but then I would have had to pay shipping and wait for it lol)
it comes with the longer shift-rod, and the new brake line you will need. Only took about an hour or so... we did remove the front/lower exhaust pipe to get easier access to the brake control (you know what I mean if you already did the forward conversion). I think the left side took a whole 10 mins.

I like your set up bro! your way is probably a better set up. To be honest I don't do long rides with my softail, it rarely gets 50 miles in a week, mainly because I have it set up for shows and showing off haha.
When I want to be comfortable for long hauls I cheat and use this bike.

lol
nice ride (again)
In all seriousness, I only have the one, so all of my mods have been about comfort, etc...
windshield, risers, forwards, even a duffle-bag thing on the back for gear. It might not be pretty, but is sure fun to ride (kinda like my... nevermind)
