Haha, Yeah a friend of mine came over to help me remove the rear tire and he was like "what does that go to?" i'm like "Oh.. um. yeah. Primary." and put it back in..

side question.. has anyone been able to mount one of the leatherworks swingarm bags with the belt guards still on? my guard presses up against the frame (top and bottom guards) right where the straps should go for the bag..

AND..

managed to get the forks taken apart without having to take them to harley. gonna have to buy new gaskets, but that's as per the norm.. but it was really like a 4 step process to get the lowers off and was surprisingly easy since they were already off the bike..
1) drain fluid from fluid drain port
2) remove the little clip at middle part of the fork, where the innards meet the outtards
3) remove allen bolt at the bottom of the fork
4) have friend hold fork down by the fender holes, then push down and slam upwards.. they come apart really easy, and there isn't much tension in those parts..

poor Lola..

I have a question for all the paint savvy people....

I have my headlight trim ring all painted in gloss black and clear coated several times. I am actually impressed with how it turned out from a rattle can. I was reading on the net somewhere that after letting the paint dry for several days to use a very fine rubbing compound on it and buff it out to give it the professional finish look. Will using the rubbing compound have a positive effect or negative effect being that it is rattle canned?? The instructions that I kinda went by for painting over chrome was using a rattle can so I can't see it hurting, I am just hesitant because the piece looks really awesome and I do not want to redo the whole thing.

Google "Wet sanding" and use somewhere between 1500 and 2000 grit paper.. they say 1000 will be enough, but a friend of mine who is a painter said 1500 on the safe side..I'm fixin to attempt the same thing as soon as the weather gets nice enough to do it.. I don't feel like filling my basement up with paint fumes

Thanks for the complement. I ordered the windshield, Nacelle and light bar when I bought the bike. Yep the windshield is made to fit with the nacelle and lights. Not sure if you can trim a stock windshield to fit, I bet you could. I don't trust the catalogs recommendations all the time. I was supposed to buy different handlebar risers for the nacelle also. just had to trim 1/8 inch off the nacelle and use stock risers, nacelle riser cover doesn't fit. But I don't like it anyway

+1 on wetsanding. When I tinted my truck tails, I used 2500 and 2000 then hit them with Meguiars 105 and 205 with orange and gray pads on my Porter Cable buffer. They turned out like glass after that.

Hand polishing sucks and you don't get consistent results but the buffer I have is like $150 and had it laying around from getting my Camaro ready for shows.

I'll look for it the next time i go into the store again. Which may be a little bit since my next trip will be once I get this wiring snafu figured out.

+2 on wet sanding. I did it on a tank and side covers for a 77 suzuki GT500B that I restored about a decade back. I put a few coats of black metallic flake on then a number of passes with clear coat sanding between each coat. With a few coats of paint on it the surface seemed to take on a bit of a dimpled look that was only noticable once I started sanding. I wet sanded with 1500, 2000, and then 2500. I heard that 2500 is about the same consistancy as a brown paper bag, which worked well too. After that I polished with the heavy and then fine grit polish and yeah... smooth as glass.

P.S. Be careful with those buffers and keep the polish wet! One of my side covers had a small burn mark in the paint where I spun the buffer up a little too fast when the polish was just on the verge of drying out. Keep it slow and wet

That's what she said.

Anywho.. My issue is going to be my impatience with waiting for the paint to dry.. i always try to do something too fast and end up mucking it all up..

Lose the guards!
