When riding with a group that was on Street Glides, one guy asked me why I wear chaps all of the time. I had him hold his hand be the side of his bike seat and then by the side of my bike seat. He then understood.
Only on really hot days do i feel the heat coming off the engine. i know capt itch makes a leather heat shied for that, but it doesn't bother me. rode all day saturday and sunday with no issues. did notice the mileage. it's been just under two years since i've had the bike and i have 15,153 miles on it
If you drive in stop and go traffic on a daily basis, it makes a huge difference. I wear leather chaps, so I don't notice the heat as much. Although riding through Salt Lake City in stop and go traffic, I could feel the heat...

Aside from protecting your leg and nuts, it's a good last line of defense against losing your oil cap.
If your oil cap is at all loose, you can add o-rings to the dip stick to make it fit a little snugger. When I remove my dipstick, I clean the dip stick and oil tank neck so it stays put. Never had an issue.

If you get too much oil in there or rely on the Dealer to change it during a service warranty, you'll need it. An o-ring won't stop a blowout, the crotch cooler won't entirely either but it will keep it from blowing all the way out on the highway.
