New Mods to Fatboy - Carlini 'Flying Apes'
+1 on HarleyGoodies post:
Just finished the installation of the Carlini 'Flying Apes' bars - 16" - 1.5" dia. w/ 'piston' risers (seen those on their website and had too have them!).
Many extended thanks to Shawn and Drew @ Dr. V-Twin, and Mark @ M & M Cycles - (actual order took 3 minutes, but great political conversation extended for forty-five minutes). Absolutely, some of the greatest vendors I dealt with over many decades of mail ordering merchandise. These guy's will definitely be my number source on all future purchases.
Here's a quick synopsis of the install: Never using the NAMZ wiring kit ordered, I ended up simply extending everything +8 using wire from an old harness.
Stagger soldered (no pins or butt splices) connections to prevent a cluster of joints.
Heat shrink everything.
Here's my screw-up, costing me a slightly used Magnum clutch cable -
While removing the cable from the transmission clutch cover, she snapped right off with minimal wrench effort. I imagine a combination of over-tightening and lack of 'anti-seize' compound from the past installation. Now I've got to destroyed the cable to remove from cover, which left the threaded furrule flush with the cover. An 'E-Z out' quickly resolved that. Lesson learned.
Finally, finished product:
Mirrors look a bit funky. Maybe some streamlined style...
And a pair of those H/D fork nut caps to match the riser style...
The height is close to shoulder level for me (confirmed by reflection in storefront glass) so everything's good. Wrists, hands and fingers extend straight out at controls. I didn't want them canted. Windshield fits nicely, though doesn't look appealing. Maybe used on those multi-hour trips.
What's next? I'd like to clean-up the rear fender by relocating the license plate frame below the tail light or vertically side mounted.
Thanks for viewing.
As modding is concerned, i can always find something to do next. I must have thought i was "done" with my bike at least 10 times by now.
